Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb set with fabulous instructions! First of all, this is the first time I've had a LEGO set for nearly 40 years. After watching LEGO Masters on TV, I looked online out of curiosity and saw the Technic range. Instantly I knew I had to have a go at building one. I settled on the Air Race Jet and I wasn't disappointed. The set offered a challenge whilst the instructions (which are unbelievably good!) kept me on the right track. The set is bigger than I imagined and remarkably sturdy (even for my clumsy hands), the working undercarriage and VTOL power functions are excellent. This may have been my first Technic set but certainly won't be my last. I am already planning my next big build and consider myself to be a confirmed AFOL!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fiddly Fun Flyer Having built two other big Technic sets, I was eager to quickly grab the Air Race Jet for a few reasons; I'm a general aviation fan, it had motorised parts that added to the value, and I just love the satisfaction of building big things. Coming in at over 1100 pieces, this is the biggest set I've dealt with thus far, and due to having to build it out of work hours it took perhaps a few hours longer than would be expected. This is no downside, however. When building the jet, it seems to take shape out of nowhere, as you start off at the fuselage and before you know it you've attached the nose section and the landing gear. The two things I love the most about this are that the battery pack and motor are included, which saves me having to fork out stupid money for a power function set, and linking in to that are the powered undercarriage and VTOL surfaces (the moving parts of such being the upper and lower fuselage fan covers, the fans themselves and the exhaust nozzle and the trailing-edge flaps). After that is the attention to detail, specifically the two contra-rotating VTOL fans located behind the cockpit, as well as the little throttle and control column on either side of the ejector seat, which I found to be a cute touch. If I have two gripes about this set, it's that 1) the bags aren't numbered. Even though I spread out the pieces into different containers, it still took my partner and I the best part of 5 minutes trying to find one tiny solitary piece that was not used anywhere else in the model. 2) The two panels under the nose, even when secured with other plates, are wobbly and loose. I would have hoped for a little more stability, but it's a minor annoyance since this will be sat on display, rather than be a heavy-play item. Overall I would recommend 42066 to any dual Lego-and-Aviation fan. Watch out, though, some of it is quite fiddly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from VTOL - Very Thoughtful Of Lego As someone who works on the real F-35 (JSF) aircraft, this was a must have kit. The model is not a bad likeness to the real thing but does look odd with no rear wings (horizontal stabilisers) - Minor gripe. Build is quite straight forward and I like the way they've incorporated the motor/control box into the main fuselage. The undercarraige is a little flimsy and you really need to make sure its at the end of the travel or it has a habit of belly-flopping. Nice touch with the controls (side sticks) in the cockpit and the limited edition 40 year brick.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lego Joint Strike Fighter!!! I was surfing through alternate regions on the Lego Shop website and ran across this model, initially only available outside of the USA. Was able to find a UK retailer with a US presence who was offering it, so I got it drop shipped from across the pond, about 6 months prior to its US release. Glad to see it finally coming to stores here! First, it's incredibly similar to the F-35 JSF. Functioning VTOL is really well executed. The landing gear is also powered, and works fine, but doesn't lock in place, so if you have the jet resting on it's wheels and your cat runs into it, it will flop onto its belly (the jet, not the cat). There are numerous well executed details, and the overall build is enjoyable with some interesting approaches and a fairly strong design, so playability should be good (I generally build and display more than play). The power cell is easily removed and replaced, making changing batteries quick and easy. It's also tucked up nicely into the underbelly, not detracting in any way from the aesthetic of the jet. The one detractor to the aesthetic is the lack of a clear plastic canopy. The cockpit is very well detailed, and there is a makeshift open canopy, buy a plastic one on this would have completed the package and would have also been very welcomed by rebuilders who would love to make other jets using many of the parts included in this set. There are plenty of pieces to make it a good weekend project, and lots of light blue pieces, which are fairly rare for technic sets. It also includes the anniversary brick included in the 2017 technic sets. Perhaps due to being sourced overseas, the bags weren't numbered, which made it more of an old school build, having to hunt for that single missing piece a couple of times. Maybe the US release will be numbered, but the instructions on here don't indicate it will. Good job on this one, Lego!
