Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I Hoped For My 9-year-old and I built this set on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It is an excellent set, full of detail, down to spiral staircase and Scabbers the rat. This set combines elements from the first two books - the mirror of Erised and Professor Quirrell, but also the basilisk. The speed at which this set went together was faster than when we built the smaller forest set. The difference was that I was not helping this time. The instructions are clear for the most part, and there were only two occasions in which we had to invoke the Great Spirit of Lego that looms in the basement playing video games. (At least I think he is a spirit. He is pretty pale). He came up and talked us through where we were confused. I really like Lego sets that are based on movies because my son is on the spectrum, and he prefers structure. The instructions provide it. He can follow along, step by step, and create something the way it is supposed to be. It is also a gentle lesson in natural consequences. If the steps are not followed, the set doesn't come together the way it is supposed to If you're looking for a set that has a lot of playability, this set isn't it. There is not a lot to DO with it - few moving pieces. But the detail and the mini figures make it an excellent addition for the collector who needs to bask in all things Harry Potter. I do hope Lego makes more of these sets in coming years. I need them all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed This was the first ever Lego set I have ever purchased and I am very happy. It took me just over 4 hours to build. The instructions were very clear and easy to understand. I am very impressed with the detail of the set and love the reversible pieces you can switch. Can’t wait to start saving and collecting more sets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific! Small moc needing a few extra pieces This is truly a terrific set, so well designed but its missing the small turrets on the main tower... I've had a look through Pick-a-Brick and with the extra pieces shown I've fixed this, enjoy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad at all, but could be better I first have to start off by saying how happy I am that Lego has reintroduced a Harry Potter line. Secondly I have to say that I'm happy to see that the Lego has returned to releasing buildings/play sets for this line as opposed to the constant stream of vehicles with relatively little play set play value that we have seen from lines like Star Wars. Actual structures/buildings/etc. allow for Lego fans to actually use their imagination and set up scenes instead of just lining up a row of vehicles. This Hogwarts set is pretty good. Great hall is... well great! I do have a few issues though. First, the staircase that leads to Dumbledore's office is a nice callback to the old sets, but the office itself lacks a chair or room to stand any more than one figure. Some of the equipment could be done w/o in order to fit a chair/desk... also Fawkes the phoenix shouldn't be hidden behind the Mirror of Erised, but in his office. Secondly, the Mirror of Erised has a slot on the top of the tower w/o any space to put figures in front of it. The whole point of it is for it to be a mirror that shows the minifigures' desires and not being able to put the minifigures in front of it without removing it from the tower entirely and setting it on table/etc. defeats the purpose of having a dedicated space for the mirror. Thirdly, why have the basilisk? There is no Chamber of Secrets here or even a compartment to store the basilisk. Seeing as this seems to be a first year Hogwarts set (since it includes Professor Quirrell, Mirror of Erised, etc.) I think including the troll and turning the bottom level of the tower into a dungeon (and moving the staircase and Dumbledore's office up one level) would have been a much better choice. Overall the design is very nice, but from a practicality standpoint there are some things that don't make sense when it comes to the playability of it, and additionally there are just some things within the Harry Potter world that would have made much more sense instead of throwing a basilisk into the set, etc. I'll give it a 7.5/10. Not bad at all, but definitely could be improved on.
