      Great Quality

This motor is great for those bigger builds that require more torque or overall power than the medium motor. However, the motor is sort of awkward to fit into custom brick builds, because it is five studs wide, and it doesn't have any stud connectors. It only has pin connectors for technic sets. But, that shouldn't be a problem if you are building with technic pieces. According to the customer service help, you should only use three XL motors for every battery box. (I don't know what happens if you use more than that.) I also know that one rechargeable battery box lasts about 2-3 hours on one charge. I would think that the AAA battery box would be more than that. Overall, it's great for bigger builds, or especially if you get the Emerald Night (which is the best LEGO train set EVER) and overall, it is a really good quality motor.

      Large and Powerful

I have used this this motor for about a year now in my Emerald Night train. More than plenty pulling power with the gear ratio assigned to the train. Only one problem: this great motor reguires a rather large locomotive-body to fit, othervise, FANTASTIC !! For smaller train builds, you can with great success use the smaller 8883 M-motor. This motor can pull the Emerald Night with the coach for about 3 hours on a fully charged 8878 rechargable battery box. So far no problems, I expect this motor to have a long and rewarding play-life for years to come.

      A great motor

I've been very pleased with the XL motor - I have two in my 8275 Bulldozer and another one on a chassis I'm making myself. The motor is quite powerful - I believe I read it was about 6x as powerful as a 9V mini motor - and it holds up well under load. It's a bit noisy, but that can be expected since it's obviously geared down. My only two complaints are 1) the power cord is a bit short, and 2) it's awkward to attach to models, especially older "studded" ones. Overall, this is a great motor and it's a good value, too.

      Get the XL!

The XL motor is way better than the medium. It has a lot more mounting points and a lot more torque. If you need more speed just gear it up!
