Just In-time for the festive holidays. As a big collector of Lego when I saw this I knew I just had to have it, Im just a big kid at heart when it comes to the festive season.
It was quite an easy build, didnt take long and looks really great once finished. I Love the rotating xmas tree as the train moves, this is a nice touch!
After I had built it I then thought this would be great if it was motorised and as the instruction booklet had stated you can add power at a later date, that was my next purchase from Lego! I purchased item 88000 battery box, 88002 Train motor, 8879 Remote Control, 884 IR Receiver.
Adding the power functions was really easy by following the additional instructions in the booklet, I even added some coal on the top of the battery pack which I think works well (check out my Pictures)
I also added an additional Lego led lighting cable that I had, so now the train has lights, super cool.
Roll on December so I can try it out under the tree!

Holiday Train Set.This review is a bit late but I definitely wanted to post my thoughts on it. I bought this set off Lego.com when it first went up for order. I thought it be a really nice addition to my Christmas Tree and I knew my Girlfriend would love it. First off the price is pretty steep for what you get within the set and second is the size. It's a really small set with not a lot too it. It took me about 3 hours. I know most can complete this set faster but even for the biggest and the smallest sets I try to take the time to really appreciate the build instead of rushing through.I honestly could have took longer but I just breezed through it while watching Christmas movies just to get to the end and see the outcome. There were some nice parts you had to build like the spinning tree and the little toys were very nice. I also like the design of the train itself very festive. You get some nice MiniFigs too. I'm just a little underwhelmed with the cost. If it was $20 or $30 less it would have been a bump in ratings. The piece count really doesn't seem to be there even though it's over 700. It's just a tad small. The inclusion of the tracks is nice though. Overall since the day I built the set it has looked really cool under the tree I just wish it was a bit cheaper and bigger with some added stuff. The bench isn't enough. There is another set that goes with this which looks cool but will hold off for now. -Ryan

The wait is over! And BOY! was it worth it.I have been waiting to get a train since I started buying the first couple WV sets on the secondary market. That's years of alternately salivating and hyperventilating at the ever escalating price of 10173. Now I finally have a train in my village.
My 6yo grandson actually built it over 2 evenings with very little help. I had to adjust the assembly and gears of the rotating Christmas tree and use big hands to secure the car platforms. Everything else was do-able for him and really, really exciting.
This is our first Lego train and I'm impressed with how smooth the movement on the track is. Looking forward to adding the motor (but that will be a surprise Santa installs on Christmas Eve).
We have added a passenger car that's a scaled down version from the 10173 train (instructions available on the Lego site; we did 3 windows per side instead of 5).
We'll have lots of fun playing with this until the rest of the village comes out after Thanksgiving. And Lego forced me to say I bought the train for my grandson but, REALLY, the village is something the whole family enjoys seeing again each Christmas season.
THANKS, Lego! I really, REALLY wanted a Christmas train!

Great setThis is a fantastic set. It is easy to build and only takes a couple of hours to put together. It will look great under the tree, but you will probably have to buy more tracks. I bought the additional Power Function parts to motorize the train, because, well, TRAIN. (BTW the automation is not required, and pushing the train is just as fun as using the remote.)
MODS: Like others who reviewed this set, I found the engine car too light to carry the motor, and experienced slipping of the wheels, especially when I added another car. I took another reviewer's advice and moved the motor to the tender/coal car and moved it to the middle of the train. It then worked perfectly. I also thought the smoke was a little small for the train, so I made that bigger. Like others, I found that the lamps on the last car made putting a full sized minifig on the outside of the car impossible. I compromised by taking the lamp off of the roof and putting it on a gold pole I had in my stock and had the ticket-taker hold this pole/lamp.
MORE MODS: After all this, I watched the Polar Express and decided to turn my new train into the Polar Express. I added a couple of kids and put the hobo on top of the additional car, which I made into the toy transport car for the movie. This ended up being a great place to put the toys that you make in the set. I added an area at the front of the train to stand and made the lamp on the engine bigger.
This is a super-cool set and I had a blast making all the mods for it. I think it will be a great addition to the North Pole Workshop and Winter Toy Shop.
