Great ModelWhen I first saw the Hogwarts Express, I knew I had to have it. A few back order later and it finally arrived. Love the look of the train!
Have to say this set appears to not have been made to be used on a track. The stock version I see better used for a kid to play with on a flat surface rather than a track, or a really good model on a shelf. However, if you are planning to place this on a track like I was, some very small and easy modifications need to be made. I found when the train was turning, the front set of wheels would connect with the second set of larger wheels and would cause a lot of drag. Also the back car's wheel don't turn like the city sets trains, also causing additional drag.
Being in the way I have it on a track, I had to add power functions. I prefer the original PF, and adding PF to the train was not overly hard, although modifications need to be made.
Not sure how LEGO feels about me modifying all 3 cars and posting about it, but its still a great train, great look, and still a good value on the cost.

my first hogwarts trainthis is only my second train and it's really a beauty. we built it per instructions first to get us started and appreciate it. my 2 year old took to it immediately, even climbing the baby gate to assault the train.
because it's not motorized it's a prety simple build, and even a simple review. it's good looking with nice gold accents. the effect the wheels have as they turn is really fun to watch. the coal car is empty and has had several minifigures hidden in there already. the passenger car is simple, but effective. i love that the side can detach for easier access and the candy cart is a decent addition.
the rail station is pretty nice looking for the price, and i love the newspaper stand and the "sirius black" wanted poster is cool. the clock's hands on the bridge can actually move and i keep using it to quiz my 6 year old on how to tell time.
i have since motorized the hogwarts train. my first train was the christmas village train that i motorized so i already had a battery box and receiver. i bought a medium motor and stuck it in the hogwarts engine with the receiver. the battery box is in the coal car. it was a slight rebuild but worth it.
my only gripes about this set are the lack of tracks and even the lack of ease to attach the station to already owned tracks. i'm not too annoyed about the train not being motorized (not everyone wants a motorized train) but making it motorized sure could've been a little easier. lastly, having the magnetic bumpers from coal car to passener car would've been a lot nicer looking.
adding two more passenger cars is on my to do list as is upgrading the train station a little bit.

2018 Hogwarts ExpressI was a little skeptical at first, another Harry Potter train set, but after putting it together I thoroughly enjoy the detail in the locomotive drive train; especially the forward truck and big driver wheels. Another plus is the sloped tiles for the boiler and the roofing for the locomotive and passenger car. Negatives are that the tender and passenger cars are a tad short. Tender is 2 lugs shorter than the previous version and the pass car is 4 lugs shorter. The passenger car could also use bogies and real trucks instead of the fixed axles. Another detail that diminishes the build is the fixed non-magnetic couplers. I'll keep one stock, and then build one which resembles previous renditions of LEGO steam train sets and then add power functions or a 9V train motor. I'll post the modified set after completion. .
LEGO . . . . More trains like this please !

Great SetCame with a nice instruction booklet, easy builds per bag, very fun to build. Definitely worth the price. I don't know though if Lego changed its train track design or this set isn't made to fit on the track. However, I only have a few older track pieces.
