Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just In-time for the festive holidays. As a big collector of Lego when I saw this I knew I just had to have it, Im just a big kid at heart when it comes to the festive season. It was quite an easy build, didnt take long and looks really great once finished. I Love the rotating xmas tree as the train moves, this is a nice touch! After I had built it I then thought this would be great if it was motorised and as the instruction booklet had stated you can add power at a later date, that was my next purchase from Lego! I purchased item 88000 battery box, 88002 Train motor, 8879 Remote Control, 884 IR Receiver. Adding the power functions was really easy by following the additional instructions in the booklet, I even added some coal on the top of the battery pack which I think works well (check out my Pictures) I also added an additional Lego led lighting cable that I had, so now the train has lights, super cool. Roll on December so I can try it out under the tree! Enjoy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Holiday Train Set. This review is a bit late but I definitely wanted to post my thoughts on it. I bought this set off when it first went up for order. I thought it be a really nice addition to my Christmas Tree and I knew my Girlfriend would love it. First off the price is pretty steep for what you get within the set and second is the size. It's a really small set with not a lot too it. It took me about 3 hours. I know most can complete this set faster but even for the biggest and the smallest sets I try to take the time to really appreciate the build instead of rushing through.I honestly could have took longer but I just breezed through it while watching Christmas movies just to get to the end and see the outcome. There were some nice parts you had to build like the spinning tree and the little toys were very nice. I also like the design of the train itself very festive. You get some nice MiniFigs too. I'm just a little underwhelmed with the cost. If it was $20 or $30 less it would have been a bump in ratings. The piece count really doesn't seem to be there even though it's over 700. It's just a tad small. The inclusion of the tracks is nice though. Overall since the day I built the set it has looked really cool under the tree I just wish it was a bit cheaper and bigger with some added stuff. The bench isn't enough. There is another set that goes with this which looks cool but will hold off for now. -Ryan

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The wait is over! And BOY! was it worth it. I have been waiting to get a train since I started buying the first couple WV sets on the secondary market. That's years of alternately salivating and hyperventilating at the ever escalating price of 10173. Now I finally have a train in my village. My 6yo grandson actually built it over 2 evenings with very little help. I had to adjust the assembly and gears of the rotating Christmas tree and use big hands to secure the car platforms. Everything else was do-able for him and really, really exciting. This is our first Lego train and I'm impressed with how smooth the movement on the track is. Looking forward to adding the motor (but that will be a surprise Santa installs on Christmas Eve). We have added a passenger car that's a scaled down version from the 10173 train (instructions available on the Lego site; we did 3 windows per side instead of 5). We'll have lots of fun playing with this until the rest of the village comes out after Thanksgiving. And Lego forced me to say I bought the train for my grandson but, REALLY, the village is something the whole family enjoys seeing again each Christmas season. THANKS, Lego! I really, REALLY wanted a Christmas train!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's ok This is my first Lego train and while I'm glad I purchased it I wasn't blown away. Personally I'd like a larger, more detailed train even if it means paying more. As others have mentioned it seems like the power functions were an afterthought. The IR receiver replaces some green with gray. The battery box takes over the coal car and sits out in the open. Basically it takes detail away from a train that was already lacking in visual appeal. Overall I'd still buy it again but I'm looking forward to making some upgrades of my own. If you're like me and this is your first train you may want to add power functions, extra track and perhaps custom train cars. I purchased all the power functions items from Lego and the switching tracks and flex tracks from Toys R Us. I still need to add the train axles and connectors to make my own cars. That adds up quickly. My advise is to check out Cargo Train 60052. Lego charges $199 for it but Amazon sells it for $123.99 with free prime shipping. It's a complete train that comes with all the power functions pieces, the switch tracks, and plenty of curved and straight track pieces. I'm kicking myself for not just buying the cargo train instead of buying all the power function and extra track separately. It would have been much easier and I'd have more for about the same price. Not to mention I'd already be playing with it instead of waiting for backordered power functions from Lego.. ugh. I'm fighting the urge to just buy the cargo train anyways but we all know how well that usually works out.
