Rated 4 out of 5 by from "Check and mate. Now king me!" -H Simpson I love that Lego finally came out with a generic chess/checkers combo set. As others have said it makes a great coffee table/conversation piece. Great utility to this set; all the pieces stow nicely below the playing surface with room to spare. While the patterns are a little redundant to build, the base is very sturdy; the ability to split it in half for more compact storage is a nice touch. The chess pieces are nicely designed with the right amount of detail, are sturdy, and have a little weight to them, without easily tipping over. The price to parts ratio is much more tolerable than some of the other themed chess-only sets. I do wish a little more thought was put into the checkers portion. A single-stud connector would have been nice for the tops, to allow “kinged” pieces to stay together. A couple extra checkers would have been nice to have too, as those are the easiest pieces to lose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a GREAT Chess Set I think that the negative reviewer missed the point on this set if he was hoping for ninjago. I have never understood the point of minifig-heavy chess sets. Every time one has come out, I have hoped for a more traditional set. The target audience for this set are older children, serious chess players and adults. If someone would like a set with mini figures that isn't a great display piece, the pirate set is currently on sale from last year. This set (although its naturally a repetitive build) was not only fun to put together, but its one of the few sets that I keep out in my living room. It looks great and is a fantastic conversation piece. I have gotten nothing but compliments on it and it is a great set to play on. I thought this set was very reasonably priced. At 1,450 pieces, its price per piece is fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing set If you love chess, and love legos this is by far a must have and a steal. It comes with a lot of pieces and offers a ton of replay value if your in a chess club or have friends and family that like to play. Best part it's two games in one checkers comes with it too. It's super easy to put together With the help of one friend he and I had it together in roughly one hour 45 mins to two hours it's a lot of pieces for the price you'll pay it should be a 199.99 set, but lego is practically giving the set away at 54.99 what are you waiting for go get it now. I also want to point out I got a free lego car with this purchase I thought that set was awesome too. I'm a chessboard collector and a collector of lego sets and I'm telling you this set is absolutely beautiful when it's all put together. It's stunning. Even if you don't play chess or checkers this set is still worth having just to add more pieces to your tubs or totes of legos. Or to leave out on a coffee table for display for invited guests in your home to gander at.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super Satisfying Build! This was my very first actual LEGO project, and I must say, it was VERY satisfying to complete. I think LEGO builds are pretty, and while I’m not huge into LEGO, and a lot of projects don’t appeal to me because they seem like a lot of work for something to just look at, but this project appealed to me way more because I love chess, and once I’ve built it, I have a fully functioning chess board that looks awesome. I am very satisfied with this build. It is very aesthetically pleasing. The board (especially the base with its pretty patterns) looks amazing, and the pieces look awesome with their themes. I think just seeing one of my favorite board games in LEGO form was just awesome in it of itself. All together, once the pieces are on the board, it truly is a piece of art, and it looks beautiful. I only have two minor complaints about how it looks, the first being that the flat pieces on the board (the pieces making up he checkerboard especially) do tend to get very visible fingerprints on them, but this isn’t a big deal as you can remove them pretty easily. The second small gripe I have is he rooks in the set have tan bricks connecting it, and it does stand out from the theme. I personally don’t mind all that much, but this is not OCD friendly. I do realize this project isn’t all about playability, but since this project was clearly designed with playability in mind, I do think this is fair to review. The pieces sit in the nubs of the checkerboard. They are harder to move by bumping, yet they remain easy to lift from the board, at least physically lifting them. Lifting pieces surrounded by other pieces, however, is more of a challenge. I actually don’t mind this all that much, because I am used to smaller chess sets where there is little room between each piece, but I can see where for a lot of people, this can be a problem. The pieces themselves are very easy to identify in game. Unlike LEGO chess sets with minifigs, the pieces actually do look like chess pieces, so it is just as easy to tell what’s what as an actual chess set. The fact that the board comes with built-in storage is awesome, but it is not practical in the slightest. I realize it’s not really supposed to be, but it is inconvenient trying to remove the sections of the checkerboard, and trying to stack the two halves is worse. The fact that you need four additional studs to stack them is actually pretty frustrating. But seeing as it is more of a work of art that also functions as a board game, it’s easy to get over this. The board also comes with checkers pieces, but these are not as playable. In fact, once kings join in the game, it’s basically unplayable. You either have to stack pieces loosely or remove some pieces just to stack them better, or put them on the board upside-down. I wasn’t more excited about he chess part however, so i didn’t mind. Next is the build. I gotta say, for a first build, as long as you can read the mostly-pictures instruction book and tell what needs to be done, it is pretty easy. People who are not good at reading these though will struggle, however, unless they are good st building without instruction at all. I labeled the difficulty as “Easy” because with decent visual-learning abilities, this is VERY easy (not to mention everything is symmetrical, so you can build a lot of this without instruction anyway), but because there are lots of chess pieces to build, it can get a little repetitive. The checkerboard is actually pretty tedious. This makes it more satisfying to complete, however, so I didn’t mind at all. Overall, I highly recommend this product if you like chess and LEGO. The deal is amazing. You get a lot for your money compared to other LEGO projects. Overall I give it a 4/5. It is a beautiful chess set on a beautiful board, and while it isn’t exactly practical to have a serious chess session on, it actually does have some nice things about its playability that most chess sets do not have. I got it on sale for $45, and money well spent in my opinion.
